Welcome to the Freshman Center Website!

Introduction to the Freshman Center:

We know many of the causes and characteristics of the problems students face as they transition to high school; research and our own data clearly indicate that there is indeed reason for concern. The good news is that many options and ideas are available for schools to use in helping students make a successful transition to and through ninth grade.

The most successful programs are variations of the school-within-a-school or "freshman center" concept. Students are scheduled in clusters with a common set of dedicated teachers, with much of their day spent apart from the rest of the student body so that they are not allowed to be anonymous.

Teachers have common planning times and work together to provide consistency in expectations, procedures, and discipline. Communication with parents is an integral part of the success in the program. High schools have found that using the freshman center model provides a structure that enables students to make the transition more easily and thus be more successful.

Transition is an ongoing process, so it cannot be accomplished in a day or a week without ongoing follow-up. Steps have been implemented to assist students from day-one to guide them onto the right track toward academic, social, and emotional success throughout their high school career. The Freshman Center was developed to provide all ninth grade students a successful transition to Pulaski County High School.
